Common Cold and Flu

Tea - Echinacea

Four cups daily throughout the course of the cold, starting at the first signs. (Do not consume this concoction on a regular basis as it could have a rebound effect and actually suppress the immune system.)

How it Works

Extracts of Echinacea, especially purpurea or angustifolia works by increasing the level of white blood cells and stimulating the immune system. It acts much like the body's own anti-viral agent- interferon. A cold infested cell will release minute amounts of interferon before it dies. This increases the surrounding cells resistance to infection.

Other Recourses

These Work

Keep eating nourishing foods. The vitamins and minerals mount an effective defense against the flu bug. Preferring liquid nourishing foods over solid ones is a good idea.

These Don't

Standard, over the counter medications for cold/flu can contain alcohol that could depress your immune system and also dry out the mouth membranes. Exerting, or exercising can depress your immune system and slow down the recovery.

Spare the Rest of the World

Avoid going to the malls, the movies, or travelling when you have the flu. It is known that even touching a door knob by an infected person could lead to spread of this malady. Washing the hands and other exposed parts of the body throughout the day with soap and water goes a long way in helping contain this ailment to oneself.
